Abstract

A smog chamber has been an effective tool to study air quality, particularly secondary organic aerosol (SOA), which is typically formed by atmospheric oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In controlled environments, smog chamber studies have validated atmospheric oxidation by identifying, quantifying and monitoring products with state-of-art instruments (e.g., aerosol mass spectrometer, scanning mobility particle sizer) and provided chemical insights of SOA formation by elucidating reaction mechanisms. This paper reviews types of smog chambers and the current state of smog chamber studies that have accomplished to find pathways of SOA formation, focusing on gas-particle partitioning of semivolatile products of VOC oxidation, heterogeneous reactions on aerosol surface, and aqueous chemistry in aerosol waters (e.g., cloud/fog droplets and wet aerosols). For future chamber studies, then, this paper discusses potential formation pathways of fine particles that East Asia countries (e.g., Korea and China) currently suffer from due to massive formation that gives rise to fatal health problems.

University of California Riverside (UCR), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) 등에서 중점적으로 수행되었고, 최근 Carnegie Mellon University (Presto et al., 2005), Harvard University (King et al., 2009), University of Florida (Im et al., 2014), Univeristy of California Los Angeles (Kim and Paulson, 2013) 등에서 수행하고 있다. 중국의 경우 2000년대 중반에 칭화대학이 스모그 챔버 연구를 시작하였고 (Wu et al., 2007), 최근에 Chinese Academy of Science (CAS)와 Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Science (CRAES) 등에서 스모그 챔버 연구결과를 발표하고 있다 (Li et al., 2014; Wang et al., 2014).

(Wang et al., 2011; Wagner et al., 2009; Kamm et al., 1999).

SAPHIR (Simulation of Atmospheric Photochemistry in a Large Reaction Chamber), 스위스의 SCAC(Simulation Chamber for Atmospheric Chemistry) 등과 같은 대형 챔버를 포함하여 유럽에 있는 총 13개의 스모그 챔버들은 유럽의 Infrastructure Program인

(Ehn et al., 2014; Jimenez et al., 2009; Ng et al., 2007a; Robinson et al., 2007).

3. 1 Gas-particle partitioning of semivolatile products from atmospheric VOC oxidation

(Atkinson and Arey, 2003).

(Finlayson-Pitts and Pitts Jr, 1999).

모든 종류의 VOCs (예, alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, carbonyls, alcohols)를 OH radical, O3 그리고 NO3 radical과 반응시켜 GC-MS/MS로 분석하여 반응속도 (kinetic rate)와 반응 메커니즘을 밝혀냈다 (Atkinson et al., 2006; Atkinson and Arey, 2003). (Kwok and Atkinson, 1995).

ROO·와 HO2 반응으로 organic hydroperoxide (ROOH)가 생성되고, 같은 ROO·끼리 반응하면 복잡한 화학반응을 거쳐 alcohol과 carbonyl이 생성된다 (Glowacki et al., 2012; Atkinson and Arey, 2003; Benson, 1965).

Fig. 2.
OH and NO3 radical reactions of VOC (alkane and alkene) (Atkinson and Arey, 2003).

Fig. 3.
O3 reactions of VOC (alkene) (*=excited state).

SCI는 다양하게 반응하는데, 물 (water vapor), alcohol, carboxylic acid 등과 반응하여 organic hydroperoxide (ROOH)를, aldehyde와 반응하여 secondary ozonide를 생성하며, 또한 이산화황 (SO2)을 H2SO4로, NO를 NO2로 산화시킨다 (Taatjes et al., 2013; Mauldin Iii et al., 2012; Welz et al., 2012; Neeb et al., 1996; Hatakeyama and Akimoto, 1994; Lai et al., 1990).

Kp=RTMWOMP0γ(1)

CPCT=1+1KPCOM-1(2)

Y1=1+1KP,1COM-1(3)

이를 SOA 수율이라 한다 (식 (4)) (Seinfeld and Pankow, 2003; Odum et al., 1996).

SOA yield for VOC =YVOC=iαiYi=iαi1+1KP,iCOM-1(4)

SOA yield for VOC =YVOC=α1Y1+α2Y2=α11+1KP,1COM-1=α21+1KP,2COM-1(5)

Yiaromatic=α1,i1+1KP,1,iCOM-1=α2,i1+1KP,2,iCOM-1(6)

3. 1. 3 SOA formation from anthropogenic VOCs (alkanes with NOx)

Fig. 4.
SOA formation mechanism of alkane-OH reactions in the presence of NOx.

Fig. 5.
SOA yields (A) and alkoxy radical reactions (B) for linear and branched alkanes (Lim and Ziemann, 2009b).

Fig. 6.

3. 1. 4 SOA formation from biogenic VOCs

Fig. 7.
Isoprene photooxidation leading to fragments through an alkoxy radical channel at NOx conditions and epoxide formation through HO2 (NOx free) conditions, followed by the formation of acid-catalyzed oligomers and organosulfates.

Fig. 8.
Acid-catalyzed oligomerization via peroxyhemiacetal formation, hemiacetal formation and aldol condensation on aerosol surface.

3. 2 Heterogeneous reactions on aerosol surface leading to oligomers

(NH4)2SO4 seed particle만 보면, [glyoxal]i×[seed particle volume]i ([glyoxal]i =initial gas-phase glyoxal concentration in ppb, [seed volume]i=initial seed particle volume in μm3/cm3; 즉, 이들의 곱은 seed particle에 분배할 수 있는 기체상 glyoxal의 농도를 나타낸다)에 따라 입자성장 (particle growth, μm3/cm3)이 높은 상관관계 (R2=0.9469)를 가지고 선형적으로 증가 (y=0.0015x-1.2027)하는데, 이 기울기가 곧 Henry’s law equilibrium을 나타내며 Henry’s law constant가 2.6×107 M/atm이 된다. 즉, 음이온의 종류에 따라 glyoxal uptake가 영향을 받으므로 이는 glyoxal과 solvent anion 사이의 상호작용에 의해 salting-in 또는 salting-out되는 현상으로 설명하였다 (Lim et al., 2010).

OH 반응의 경우 Henry’s law constant는 1×107 M/atm 정도로 증가하여 황산염 이온 (sulfate ion)에 의한 증가와 비슷하게 나타났다 (Ervens and Volkamer, 2010; Volkamer et al., 2009).

(Pitts and Stephens, 1978).

Fig. 9.
Photochemical O3 formation leading to LA smog through oxidation of VOC (Haagen-Smit, 1952).
